The Richland Methodists organized here in 1877, saved their members from traveling three miles to attend services in Fountain Head, and built their own worship sanctuary in 1882. The congregation grew up in Portland and merged with the Fountain Head congregation in 1927. Bishop Paul B. Kern dedicated the present building free of debt in August 1947 and renamed it McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church in honor of Bishop William McKendree at the juncture of Wheeler Street and Portland Boulevard."
